So after a long holiday away from Uni, I'm back for my final year!
I got a 2:1 for last year so I need to go hard this year to work for the best grades possible! Anyway...
So I've just finished my first week back and we're already moving into a project, back to concepting a game idea.
Since we were told to concept new ideas on Tuesday and it's now only Thursday, we haven't had much time to think about it, however, I had one concept I put forward to the new group, which is as follows;
Lead design - Ryan
Programming/design - David
Programming/design - Myself
Artist - Martin

Since last year taught us a lot of lessons about time management and handling tasks with strict deadlines, we realised quickly we could be original and ambitious, but had to think realistically, a few ideas about long winded story driven adventure games quickly arose, but were shot down due to the lack of time we would have to incorporate such story into a game within our given time.
My girlfriend of a year has recently moved to Korea to study abroad, personally, this has made me feel a bit empty, and was the inspiration for the game concept I pitched;
The game would start with a protagonist (no name, no story), and he would be stood near a house, in a green field resting under a beautiful blue sky, with nothing but a though in his head, of his love, who had moved away/been kidnapped/died (not sure on the full story, still need to flesh out the details), this would lead to a minor chorded intro music and all of the colour draining out of the game; I think this is a powerful intro since there's no need for narrative/text/voicing, any person, any background, any creed can instantly get an emotional reaction, knowing that the character they're looking at has lost something, and in turn, his world has been draining of life (colour).
The game's goal would be to collect spheres of colour, one colour at a time, returning all colour to the world, and regaining happiness. The game's core idea is this, however, some things need to be considered, game style (top down/platformer), and how the spheres are obtained (through levels / puzzles / battles etc).
Well it's only been one week, but Longshot seem to like my idea, and so does out new lecturer Peter! So this weekend we're going to put it out of mind and concept more ideas so we don't get stuck on just one, But in the meantime I'm going to flesh out my own idea a bit more, Anyway, this first blog is rambling a little bit so i'll end it here, Laters.
** I should mention, the plan (this far) is to have all the backgrounds really scenic, colourful and water coloured, since this is a major aspect of the games visuals!
